Westcroft Community Centre and Burnage Community Blox have launched LET'S COOK TOGETHER!
Each week, will receive all the ingredients needed to cook a wholesome family meal with their child/children. This is completely free; all we ask of members is that they cook together, and hopefully share their amazing recipes, meals and family experiences with the group. People that share the best photo or story each week also win a cookery-related prize! Want to get involved? Get in touch today for further information on how to join! The menopause affects so many of us, yet is discussed so little.
To change this, a new Menopause Support Group has been set up at Westcroft Community Centre. Run by two Westcroft volunteers Linda and Bernie, this is a place where women can talk to others, ask questions, find new ideas and discover how others are coping with their symptoms and what support is available to them. It will run on the last Thursday of the month from 4.30-6.30pm and you can just drop in. If you’d like any more information, contact us. A really useful website for information about the menopause for both men and women is www.menopausematters.co.uk. The doors to Westcroft Community Centre are open again, and our volunteers and staff are thrilled to be welcoming people back again after a long year without visitors. The services currently running at the centre are: You can find the latest timetable of weekly events here.
More of our services are opening all the time - contact us if you have a question about an activity or would like to use the centre for something else. SOUPER CHATTY is a brand new support group run by local parents, for parents who would like to discuss their children's mental health in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. It's not about giving medical advice, but creating a safe space in which to share stories - over soup!
Limited places are available. To register your interest please email community.blox19@gmail.com or come into Westcroft. Next Tuesday 3rd December come and join us for another free movie night at Westcroft. This time we're showing the brilliant and acclaimed film 'Marvellous' (not a football film!). It will be a wonderful evening and opportunity to relax and enjoy a great movie while meeting new and familiar faces from the community.
Like last time there will be free popcorn and hotdogs (with vegan option available) to accompany the film. At the last event we had a completely full house, so don't miss out - reserve your ticket at our office, or by contacting us, today! Please note this film is only suitable for over 15s. Westcroft and its community has been growing and evolving, and we wanted to update its brand to give it a strong new identity to match. As with everything at Westcroft, the input of the community had to be at the centre of this change.
We completed a rebrand exercise with our staff, volunteers and visitors. This helped us to determine what sort of qualities and characteristics people felt that Westcroft had, and from that information, we developed a new brand concept and logo. The themes that emerged most strongly from the feedback were of Westcroft Community as the heart, or lifeline, of the community, and Westcroft as a place for connecting and empowering local people. On Tuesday we screened the first of a series of film nights. As it is the holidays we made sure we chose something that would appeal to families and suit guests of all ages. Our film of choice was ‘Wonder’, a beautiful film that had everyone engrossed throughout, accompanied by popcorn, sweets and hot dogs, with both meat and vegan options available for all. We were visited by new families which is always fantastic to see and over 40 children and parents filled the room. A lovely evening for all. Did you come along? What films do you think we should put on in the future? Leave us a comment with your suggestions below. Stay tuned for more two film nights this year! Last week we hosted our annual Community Fun Day. Now in its fourth year, the day has grown from a small yearly meet up, into a jam-packed day of games, sports and fun for the whole family!
Held on the green space next to Westcroft, the day included a number of exciting activities to enjoy; there was a bouncy castle, a nerf-gun target range and a cue ball crazy tournament, all of which helped to encourage some friendly competition and get everyone active. For those looking to get arty, a crafts stall and wood carving bench were up and running, and proved to be really popular throughout the day. We also had a wonderful face painter, Hannah from Fantastic Faces, whose amazing art added an extra splash of colour to every smile. We were so pleased to see so many families from our community come along to join in the fun. Not only was the day a great opportunity to meet the neighbours, but it was also a chance for residents to get to know Westcroft and Southway staff a bit better too. Members of the Environment, Community Involvement, Neighbourhood Services and Advice Teams were present throughout the day, both to support the event and offer advice. Community Development Officer, Matthew, said It was a fantastic day! Now in its 4th year, our Community Fun Day is getting bigger and better all the time. We had really good attendance and fantastic feedback. We’ve just opened for Quid's In at Westcroft and all the conversation is about what a great day it was. Thanks to everyone who helped out and everyone who came along! A big thank you to the Southway Housing and Westcroft volunteers who gave their time and efforts to ensuring the Fun Day ran smoothly and successfully. We are delighted by the day’s success and know it has put us in great stead for our next community events! Did you come along to the day? Would you like to see anything else at next year's event? Let us know below, and please share any pictures you took! Sometimes, the old ones really are the best! A Lego session at Westcroft yesterday saw a completely new group of families come into the centre, joining lots of our regulars. It was a great way to engage and have fun.
Working together with Burnage Library and the local heritage project Burnage: A Place Called Home, we were building our homes of the future. The future looks like an interesting place! |
